What We Do
The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council are the nation's pre-eminent source of high-quality, objective advice on science, engineering, and health matters. Most of our work is conducted by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. The Research Council, the operating arm of the NAS and NAE, performs its studies and workshops through five major divisions; Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Earth and Life Studies, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Policy and Global Affairs, and the Transportation Research Board.
Bringing Together Interested Parties
Throughout any given year, we convene hundreds of conferences, workshops, symposia, roundtables, standing committees, and other gatherings that attract the finest minds in academia and the public and private sectors. These venues for discussion and debate are essential for allowing the scientific process to unfold. In addition, we publish dozens proceedings and summaries on these activities each year.
Journals and Periodicals
Our prestigious journals, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research Journal, and Transportation Research Record, publish the latest scientific findings on a wide range of topics. We also produce a host of other magazines and publications that cover critical issues of science, technology, and health.
Across International Boundaries
Science, engineering, and medicine are truly international endeavors that bridge cultural differences. Learn more about our international partnerships, projects, and activities.
Education and Outreach
We are committed to making sure that every American is scientifically and technologically literate and able to make informed decisions. We offer a variety of opportunities from grade school to grad school and beyond that are designed to ensure lifelong learning, promote research across disciplines, and engage the public in a deeper understanding of science.
Recognizing Outstanding Achievement
Each year NAS, NAE, IOM, and Research Council present a number of prestigious awards to encourage and reward exemplary professional achievements.
